The evolution of the BL genre in K-Dramas has been rising; now there are more stories that take a step ahead from not just realizing one’s sexuality, and coming out. They have more meaningful stories considering the trauma, and societal pressures and also normalizing homosexuality, and of course, finding true love.
Be it the actors, or the makers, or the scriptwriters, all of them have the potential to show the genre in a more appealing and interesting way.
The latest BL drama “The Eighth Sense” stars the rookie actors Lim JiSub as Seo JaeWon and Oh JunTaek as Kim JiHyun, this has been the best BL drama so far this year with an amazing storyline.
To summarize, the drama tells the story of two college students Seo JaeWon and Kim JiHyun. Ki JiHyun who came from the countryside to study in Seoul meets and falls in love with his senior/sunbae Seo JaeWon in college and is also a member of the surfing club which JiHyun later joins and discovers JaeWonโs trauma from the past.
So, here are the 3 most heartfelt moments or sequences of moments that make the latest drama the eighth sense worth watching.
Spoiler Alert: If you haven’t watched the series yet, this article contains spoilers.
1. Overcoming Depression
The drama has shown depression and therapy sessions in more detail, yet making it precise for viewers to understand. From the start of the series, Seo JaeWon is shown taking therapy sessions for his depression. Despite all the trauma, vulnerabilities, and fear, which is deeper on the inside, he rather appears to be the most cheerful person to other characters.
We could always sense the change and improvement in his therapy sessions through the arrival of JiHyun in his life. JaeWon’s character depicts his suffering with trauma, depression, and guilt from the past which restricted him to pursue love, just to protect his partner. But later in the end, he overcame the guilt and fear, at least to some extent, and could express his love to JiHyun.
2. Intimacy at Another Level
Regardless of their sexuality in real life, it’s not easy to portray a character’s sexuality pleasantly on screen for the actors. But this drama has shown characters getting intimate with each other, pouring all of them on each other, and there are some reasonable number of kissing scenes that made our hearts flutter and made it more satisfying for the viewers too.
The episode which is must mention is where JiHyun and JaeWon both go to the beach and have a wholesome time together. The whole episode itself has the sweetest movements filled with love and enough intimacy (which is normally shown less in BL series). It gets us a lot more excited as BL fans when it is the least expected and is shown suddenly out of the blue.
3. Patching Up
We almost thought that JiHyun is dead, after the beach incident, but there was always a little hope, and we were rooting for the characters to become one.
In episode 8, JiHyun was giving a presentation about a movie called โIโm a Cyborg, but Thatโs Okay,โ in which the lead characters suffering from mental health issues and trauma actually met in the most unconventional circumstances but end up loving each other.
At last JiHyun says this line referring to characters in the movie: โAdam and Eve, who were created from Adamโs rib can both live the way they want to live.โโ From this line, it feels like he is indirectly telling about himself and JaeWon to actually do what they like and pursue love irrespective of gender, though stereotyped as unconventional.
Later in episode 9, towards the end, JiHyun sends this song called ‘The Story’ by Conan Gray to JaeWon, which makes him come back to JiHyun. We can see how perfectly the song is set in the scene, that totally blends in the situation and makes it more overwhelming to the emotions of the characters.
Apart from these scenes, there are many other aspects of the drama, like the young and fresh actors, the storyline, especially set in the college atmosphere, make the series worth watching.
