5 Times When Kokdu In “Kokdu: Season of Deity” Crashes Down Our Prediction From All Their Counterpart Scenes On Past Reincarnation Theme K-Dramas

MBC

It seems almost a decade that K-Drama creators have been making reincarnation-theme K-Dramas. Korean TV shows have more or less 13 reincarnation-theme shows already – if we start to count from “My Love From The Star” and ends with the ongoing drama, “Kokdu: Season of Deity“.

With so many reincarnation-theme K-Dramas, it seems natural for viewers to express their comparison of Kokdu to Goblin and its related trope “Doom At Your Service” – in various comment sections of Korean drama blogs. Even the official Twitter account of Viu Philippines tweeted that Kokdu gives off a Goblin vibe and that comparison may either excite or bore the viewers.

If it’s the latter, it’s because – “Any predictable and repetitive experience becomes boring” (Dr. Shahram, “Psychology Today”). Hence, some K-Drama fans may feel wary of watching Kokdu since they have probably seen enough similarities within each of the previous reincarnation-theme K-Dramas, so the thought of Kokdu being the same can enter fans’ minds.

If you are one of those and you’re searching for more reasons to start watching Kokdu. Then this article might be helpful to you.

Warning: This article contains massive spoilers

1. When Do JinWoo is not the reincarnation of Oh Hyeon

In the (more or less) modern era of the usual reincarnation-theme K-Dramas such as “My Love From The Star“, “The Legend of the Blue Sea“, “Tale of the Nine-Tailed“, “Bulgasal: Immortal Soul“, “Tomorrow“, etc., the twin face of the historical protagonists is their present life. But so far, Kokdu continues to present that JinWoo and Oh Hyeon (Kim JungHyun) are different people.

2. GyeJeol and Kokdu have the almost “perfect balance” of authority over each other

We are used to watching K-Drama male leads as demure whenever they converse, debate, and argue with the bubbly female leads. Sometimes, it’s the other way around, with a once-in-a-blue-moon similarity in their disposition. Nonetheless, male protagonists, a lot of times, have the last say in the conversation.

Kokdu’s main lead couple seems to be breaking the conventional “opposite disposition, upper or lower hand,” considering that they consistently parallel each other’s way of speaking and behaving. Also, as long as both of them have rebuttals on their mind, they wouldn’t let the other take the last say. Furthermore, Kokdu is not always the savior and the dealer of the problem. For instance, when GyeJeol (Im SooHyang) pays the table seller a quadruple amount just to get back Kokdu’s table (Shocking, right? Cause we know the “paying act” is more typical to male leads.)

3. When GyeJeol did not remember her past life even after kissing Kokdu

If you have seen the Goblin, you’ll likely feel a deja vu when you watch Kokdu say, “Kissing is the door to a person’s previous life.” Eventually, the story arc will feel intriguing once you have observed that GyeJeol did not have the eureka effect after she called Kokdu, Oh Hyeon.

4. When the drama did not use a hypnotherapy chair to make GyeJeol remember her past life.

The moment GyeJeol lies on the chair, Heo JoonJae’s (Lee MinHo) or Park JungGil’s (Lee SooHyuk) moment of remembering their past life may come flashing into your mind. But don’t expect too much because the hypnotherapy chair in K-Dramas is not only for recalling one’s past life but also for confession (Just kidding!).

5. Having lengthy unimportant conversations

Not everyone may agree on this, but there are more instances that K-Drama characters would reply either “Aigoo” or a “Sneer” to the silly questions and remarks of the other character – which makes insignificant conversations so short. In Kokdu, there seem to be a lot of extensive explanations, replies, and questions that are not important. On a positive note, trivial conversations are helpful when you need to do something else while watching Kokdu.
