On August 7, TVXQ member and soloist U-Know YunHo dropped his third mini album “Reality Show”, a six-track album featuring a variety of genres such as swing, jazz, and pop all wrapped into one superb release. It shows off the singer’s colorful duality and charisma.
In past releases such as ‘Thank U’, ‘Follow’, and ‘Eeny Meeny’, U-Know has proven himself to be a master in the synth and electro-pop genres, proving that he moves with the trends as time passes by.
With his latest album “Reality Show”, the veteran idol dabbles in the jazz-like category of music, exuberant of a sensual appeal that can be found in U-Know YunHo and U-Know YunHo only.
Opening up the mini album with ‘Wannabe’, the singer displays his raw and hedonistic side with a track heavy on brass and piano, much like TVXQ’s past release ‘Spellbound’.
In ‘Wannabe’, U-Know YunHo sings about rediscovering oneself after the feeling of being lost nearly consumes him. “The only showman on stage is me/You have to find out yourself and face it,” he sings over trumpets. The heavy brass carries the song in a melodic tune that is bound to devour the attention of listeners just after the first listen.
Following ‘Wannabe’ is ‘Vuja De’, a swing song that takes listeners on an audible rollercoaster. Reliant on piano and percussion, the track gives insight into U-Know YunHo’s wondrous world of non-stop feverish dancing. “I’m dizzy, I’m dizzy baby/I cannot stop/Confused with this dancing” is sung over the bright drums and piano.
In the third track, ‘Tarantino’, the singer slows it down with a mid-tempo guitar and whistle tune that has listeners feeling like their life is a movie soundtrack, given it is named after a renowned movie director. “In a provocative style/Make you addicted to me,” he croons in a manner that will have listeners holding onto their breath for their dear life.
U-Know revisits his pop roots with ‘Relax’, a feel-good song that reminds listeners that “you gotta relax”. The rhythm of the song is infectious, an ear-worm that captivates ears with its bass and synth-like features.
The fifth track ‘Spotlight’ implements an electric guitar and digital piano, making it a groovy song that can be considered the older sister of his past release, ‘Need You Right Now’.
‘Spotlight’ discusses the importance of having a dream and not letting go despite any circumstances that might serve as an obstacles blocking one from achieving that dream. U-Know YunHo sings, “Even if everything disappears the moment the lights go out/I won’t stop until you find me/I’m gonna turn on the light, turn on the spotlight”.
In the sixth and final track, ‘Curtain’, there are jazz-like instruments such as bass, piano, and soft percussion. U-Know YunHo works to deliver an emotional and gorgeous ballad that plucks at the emotional strings of the listener. It closes off the album with feelings of contentment and peacefulness that uniquely identify the charming factor of U-Know YunHo’s musical character.
Overall, “Reality Show” defines the idol to be a strong artist that has transfused different genres into his own category of music that can only be described as U-Know YunHo.
In the 13-minute music video for ‘NEXUS’, U-Know YunHo ventures on a journey of action and danger alongside aespa’s Karina who works to guide the idol through his adventure of self discovery.
U-Know YunHo’s “Reality Show” is available across all streaming platforms and the ‘NEXUS’ music video is available on YouTube as of August 7.
