“The Gil” is a music documentary short film that captures the process of four British artists remaking the popular songs ‘Road and ‘One Candle’ (both composed by JinYoung Park, or JYP) by the Korean group god. The film was shot entirely on location in London over a month. The main vocalist, Johnny Copley, hails from the Bath area in the UK and is a talented musician with a keen interest in K-Pop, having previously worked in the UK and the USA. Rapper Park SeungWoo is a British Korean with a background as a pianist-turned-rapper, who is finding his own path as an indie singer. Ruth Guillem Gomez and Nicole Hardisson Hernandez, both active indie singer-dancers in the UK, showcase their passion for K-Pop, having even appeared on stage at SBS in Korea two years ago.

Director Jeon SaetByul, a rising talent of Korean descent in the UK, brings her debut film to life, having graduated from Kingston University renowned for its film program. Director Ko Bongsu, a former hip-hop rapper, took on the roles of director and cinematographer. Through this project, they rediscovered the song they had enjoyed for 20 years during their adolescence and conveyed their gratitude for the cast, who followed them diligently despite the challenges.

The film beautifully illustrates the friendship forged among the four artists, delving into their inner selves as they navigate the blurred lines between reality and dreams. Their story resonates universally, offering a fresh perspective to those on a journey of self-discovery and artistic expression.

FrontRow‘s CEO, Monica HyeRim Lee, shared insights into the challenging yet enjoyable collaboration between Korean and British musicians and producers, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to witness how Korea’s representative melodies and lyrics resonated with British artists. She affirmed FrontRow’s commitment to future projects that continue to explore new horizons.

The documentary’s soundtrack songs will be distributed worldwide on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Melon in December.
