As the new month begins often means a lot of people looking to refresh their playlists with new artists, discovering new music genres, looking for new artist recommendations, personal music tastes changing into something new. Thankfully as it just so happens it often also means more tour announcements, new album or single announcements and official playlists created and curated for fan by the artist. Some of these artists were personally recommended to me, while some of the songs mentioned were found due to the suggestion of Spotify’s ‘Daily Mixes’ that they personally curate for you based on your listening interests and favourite songs or through YouTube Home Page suggestions that caught my eyes.
In order to not drag out this article, we will focus on the 10 favourites of mine of artists and songs you should listen to at least once and those to possibly add to your new playlist. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
1. Anode.
In the latest article [ Lee Min Jong and Park Jiho officially debuts as the duo ‘ANODE’ and release their second single ], we dig a little bit into the duo’s history as producers for Mystic Story would step into the public spotlight as official artist. They debuted with the first single in the series, ‘iGaMiNe #1 Trouble’ and have since released the second single ‘iGaMiNe #2 Fine’ which contained the two tracks: Fine and SilkRoad.
2. Paul Kyte. (paulkyte 폴카이트)
Paul Kyte who is a South Korean Singer Songwriter and Producer has collobrated on different songs for artists such as HuckleBerry P, Yerin Baek, Palalto and Verbal Jint would make his official debut on April 17th 2019 with the mini album ‘Small Talk Thief’ and would release the full album on his Official Youtube which currently holds three videos and 571 subscribers. According to his Instagram Bio, the artist is signed/with ‘loveyourjanuary‘ and is listed as a producer from kmr.hq and smashhit_official.
Most known for his songs ‘Hollow Wood’, ‘Not That Important’, ‘Moment’, ‘Time’, ‘Our Paradise’, ‘Sensitive’ and ‘Melting’ to name a few the artist has released his first song in two years entitled ‘Grown Up Man’. The song itself talking about the reality a lot of individuals face when becoming adults, especially when being told to ‘grow up’ and the negative impacts that may have on someone. The song was released on July 28th 2024.
3. Ku One Chan.
One of the artists who gave me the idea to write this article in the first place is Ku One Chan, an artist notably and respectively known for his well beloved tracks ‘Don’t be sad’, ‘How Did You (feat. Yerin Baek)’, ‘Expression’, ‘Scarecrow (feat. WONSTEIN)’, ‘Between Hearts (OST)’, ‘GAME BOY’, ‘Long Time No’, ‘Duh! and ‘The Chair’. Paired with a impressive following on Spotify and an aesthetic feed over on Instagram, it’s easy to see why this artist is becoming more and more recommendation to international fans of South Korean Indie and South Korean R&B. He is definitely an artist I suggest to those just getting into the genre or curious about the genre itself and wanting something new to explore with a impressive discography.
4. Goopy.
An artist I have talked about before and my love for his tracks ‘Teenage’, ‘Cloud’, ’11:59′ (Feat. Goopy’), ‘Mr.Mood’ and ‘Don’t Kill my Vibe’, although his stage name might be funny to some Jeon Hyuk-Jun is still an artist people should check out at least once. From songs that make you wanna groove and just give you happy vibes throughout your day, he debuted as an independent artist back in 2018 and is currently underneath ALFHA a South Korean record Label founded by JEY.
Last Year Goopy would wipe his Instagram account and only appear to post his newest and professional black and white pictorials that offer a more mature look into the artist and photos that show that new side of him. Goopy would also open up his newest project ‘900pyfriends’, a project seemingly focused on Live Life and Love, although some fans would show concern for the artist in his message that he shared in both Korean and English, fans are currently assuming his hiatus is to focus on himself and other hobbies. While we wait for an official post from the artist, he is still someone I totally suggest to new Korean indie and Korean R&B artists.
5. homezone.
One of the favourite artists of mine that I have interviewed and one of the kindest in my opinion, Yoo HongJong is most known by his stage name ‘Homezone’ (홈존). He is a South Korean Singer Songwriter who debuted with the digital single [ Hymn To The Equinox ] back in 2019 and is currently known to his fans for his most popular and fan beloved tracks (but not limited to): Answer, Like We Turn The Pages (Remastered VER), You Are My Night, Picture, Winded, moving on, April Sadness (feat. JUNE), Warm (Remastered Ver) and August 7:28pm.
Homezone is the type of artist who wants to make you feel at home no matter where you are, providing you comfort with his lyrics and songs, while also being a place of happiness to his fans. Putting a smile on their faces with his updates and notifications of his uploads. He is the type of artist that I suggest to those who enjoy the artists Aden, HAAN, soowoo, Chawoo, Austn, Jonghan, VVON or KIM Museum.
6. BoyCold.
One of my favourite producers and singers to talk about and listen would have to be BoyCold. Jung Sung Won is a South Korean Rapper and music producer underneath Sony Music Entertainment who first got his start as a music producer in 2015 with the song ‘Boys To Men’ for Crucial Stars EP ‘BoyHood’. Since then he has made a name for himself in the music industry, paired with a positive reputation and taking part in numerous OST (Official Sound Tracks) and known for being a judge for SMTM8, Jung Sung Won has worked with many impressive and well beloved artists within the different music scenes in South Korea ranging from but not limited to: OnlyOneOf, pH-1, Car the Garden, Coogie, Haon, BewhY and The Quiett to name a few.
For new listeners, I personally recommend the following songs as my most listened to and the songs that keep me coming back to his artist profile: Youth! (feat. Bewhy, HAON & Coogie), Colde Outside Love (with JUNNY), Down (with george), Cruise and Fine (feat. SOMA & Woodz).
7. t024.
Previously recommended in my articles [ t024 talks about their latest release ‘Cedarwood & Tangerine’ in exclusive interview ] and The Rookie List 3: Performances and Artists to check out at least once!, t024 are artists to add to your profile to add something new, refreshing and unique to that playlist.
Two Twenty Four (t024) is a South Korean R&B Duo consisting of the members Nap!er (Baek Woobin) and Senji (Kim Yunwoo). The duo has produced for artists like OnlyOneOf, Xydo and Soseo. Paired with their musical and artist talents and model like visuals, it makes sense why the duo is so popular amongst their fanbase. Since debuting on December 8th 2024 with the EP [ leftovers ] with the duo title tracks, ‘tinman ‘and ‘leftover’, the duo would become known for their songs; fox, more a more (Mixtape), get over, FFY and On my Side. Since their last release in 2023, t024 would release their first song of 2024 entilted [ Cedarwood & Tangerine ].
8. RedHouse. (Member of the band: Miichi)
Although not a lot has been revealed about the members of the band [ Miichi ], throughout my discography and writing of the band itself, the members and ‘Red House’ especially got my attention, according to this profile, it was shared that he was a member of R&B Trio 1844 around 2019 while previously making his solo debut in 2018 with [ COLOUR ]. Since then, he has released numerous songs as he grew up, achieving his first EP [ CLOSET ] in 2018 before releasing his first album [ Passing time that makes me feel alive ] that contained a whopping 10 tracks in 2020. Some of his most popular tracks from that album including; Perpetual which currently stands at 56 thousand streams, while Milky Way has its own impressive number of 17 thousand streams making them the rock stars of the album release itself thanks to the massive amount support the release has seen.
For this artist I personally recommend I hate this city, Bad Way, I Did my Best and his latest music release so far, ‘Woman’.
9. Kim Ujoo.
An artist I found last month due to the YouTube Home Page Suggestions based on the music I listen to while on Youtube, I was pretty pleased with this suggestion. According to his YouTube profile it was created in 2019 and he wouldn’t start posting cover videos until 2020. Within the descriptions he would share his official SoundCloud and Instagram account. According to this profile that I found, the artist is a South Korean Singer underneath Mun Hwa who debuted on December 19th 2019 with the single album 잔흔 and was born on June 2nd 1997.
Since then he has gain a healthy amount of recognition over on Spotify by officially being added to a number of official and fan made playlists consisting of different South Korean Indie & R&B playlists, he would later be recognized by Spotify by an official ‘This is Kimujoo’ Playlist would be created and an official radio station for Kimujoo of songs in similar tastes to the artists releases.
I personally recommend my current on going listens by this artist to new readers and listeners: Pillow, joe and The Worst Person in the World (feat. Mingginyu). I would also want to add my current favourite EP released back in 2021: [ When I’m With You ].
10. Jung Wooseok.
Known most notably for being one (if not) the tallest members and youngest member in Pentagon, Main Rapper, Singer Songwriter, Producer and Model. Jung Woo Seok is known for his impressive facial expressions throughout different stages while being able to rap in Korean and Japanese with a unique flow and is able to adapt to different song genres and releases.
If you don’t know Wooseok personally you might recognize him as the co writer for the song ‘No Way’ by Unit Red during the show The Unit, featured in the credits of Huis song ‘A Song from a dream’ or for being the official DJ on EBS Midnight Baram Radio as his alter ego ‘Woodi’.
Although he would leave Cube Entertainment (but still remain as a member of Pentagon), the artist would later go on to share with fans on January 1st 2024 that he has since signed an official and exclusive contract with UNFD (Undefined) Entertainment. The agency would focus on official campaigns for the artist, modelling, concert, fan meetings, promotions and handling official projects and SNS (Social Media) accounts for Wooesok. Wooseok would officially join Weverse for his solo fan community before making his official solo debut on February 24th 2024 with the single album ‘Empty Paper’ which contained the tracks ‘Navy Blue’ (Title Track) and ‘Sketch’.
