Music and talking about the artists, musicians and the scene is general is a really fun conversation for me and is something I have a lot of passion behind. When researching artists and how differently each scene celebrate important milestones on popular sites like the Grammy’s Recording Academy, Apple Scoop, Habit Music, it was really interesting to me to learn just how differently everyone views and celebrates important milestones. Even more so how much an artist much work to be discovered by their audience in the first place, the precautions they must take and how much variety there truly is.
From the artists The Vaccines to celebrate their impressive impact they had for a decade with the deluxe version of their debut album ‘What did you expect from the vaccines?’, Tame Impala celebrating their ten years of the popular fan favourite ‘InnerSpeaker’ album by sharing a short film of the same name and a 15 minute video unveiled with never seen before footage of the albums production that took place in Australia, while K-Pop artists such as BTS would unveil their love to fans with numerous achievements throughout their career. Some of the most popular content apart from RUN BTS being numerous livestreams, special events, pop up events and even their well accomplished series ‘FESTA’ and would eventually hold their 10th anniversary with BTS FESTA.
K-Pop has taken the world by storm and are known to captivate audiences with their performances, meaningful song lyrics. But it is also known to be a very competitive scene, with new groups and artists debuting daily sometimes even hourly, some fans say this is a big part of the reason why even small milestones are cherished and showered with love even more as its so hard to make it in the scene these days. Previously accomplishing smaller milestones like their 100 day anniversary which was held on Vlive, OnlyOneOf would celebrate their 5th anniversary with their fan base lyOn’s (pronounced as ‘lions’) on Youtube that was streamed 10 hours ago.
Despite how large the K-Pop scene is, there are very artists fans can look to for comfort or those even willing to discuss and address the community that is LGTBQ+. As previously discussed in Kianna’s article [ 5 K-Pop MV’s that Touched on LGTBQ+ ] and within the article by the Staff Writer Jennifer [ Top 5 OnlyOneOf Choreographies that Deserve your attention ], OnlyOneOf is a group that has stepped into the scene by its spell binding performances, charms and has been a beacon of creativity since their debut. Originally debuting as 7 members, they were the first boy group to ever debut underneath 8D Creatives (RSVP) Entertainment/Agency on May 28th 2019 with the popular fan favourite tracks ‘Time Leap’ and ‘Savanna’. Throughout their career the artist and popular fan favourite LGTBQ+ artist Holland would be one of the first if not the only artist to send welcoming and warm messages to the group for their concept and imagery they would begin to portray within their music and sending them support back in 2021. Within this timeframe, OnlyOneOf would become recognized for their songs ‘Libidio’ and ‘Instinct’ which would feature elements of homosexuality and comforting those within that scene before the OST for the drama ‘Sweet Blood’ would include BL (Boy Love) undertones.
While learning about OnlyOneOf these last two point five years and connecting with the fanbase I think as a lyOn myself and others would inform intrigued readers that the artists are very good at describing themselves and showcasing the ability to convey with various emotional narratives throughout their music. Experimenting with group work, solo work such as their Underground Idol series where each member expressed themselves in a new story and each released a solo song within the series, and has such a unique styling of their music its difficult to say they have just one concept or music impression/ style.
Putting some of the more popular tracks aside like dOra maar, dOpamine, gaslighting, sage, O, skinz, angel and ultimate bliss, here are some of my favourite top five live clips, music videos, b sides and performances for intrigued readers or new listeners to OnlyOneOf I feel like everyone should listen to at least once or for those looking to celebrate their 5th anniversary with.
1. OnlyOneOf PicassO + Gravity.
My favourite track of the 3 track EP [ dot point jump Vol.2 ] is the r&b and pop track that is picassO and one of the songs that was incredible to watch live during their concert back in Vancouver.
The group would appear on wall.live ahead of their world tour on January 18th 2024 to perform a incredible perfect blend of their tracks ‘picassO’, gravity and dOpamine. Showing off their ability to perform live and feel the vibe of the song itself, with Junji’s non stop smiling during the performance of Gravity, and Mill’s, Yoojung’s and Rie’s groovy dances throughout the song it is a performance I totally recommend to fans and intrigued readers.
Readers can find and listen to dOpamine and gravity on their latest EP [ Things I Can’t say LOve ].
2. lOve me.
One of the songs I’m addicted to currently, OnlyOneOf would appear on Arirang Radio for their latest promotion and to perform various songs for listeners which would later be shared once again to YouTube viewers. lOve me is apart of the groups BL drama and popular fan favourite [ Bump Up Business ] and was released on the Part 2 soundtrack back in October 2023.
For those who love live and chill performances or those wanting something easy to have within the background or even to sing a long to, this OST is definitely a song to check out. For those curious about Bump Up Business and the drama itself, check it out here.
3. OnlyOneOf You.
A personal choice and a song that has captured my heart in some of the most difficult times of self hatred in my life is a song so special to me and that got me through a lot would be onlyoneof you. The song itself something I wish for people to talk about more after seeing it performed live, the lyrics so beautifully unique; ‘My universe shines’, ‘ocean of starlights’ to name a few.
For those looking a more comforting track infused with slight dance pop and alternative pop influences, this is the song for you.
4. mirage.
When it comes to a diverse range of music taste and surprise to seeing how much the genres I loved have changed since entering my twenties, songs like Mirage that offer a beautiful singing even from those within the ‘rapper’ position of the group is something I always find impressive.
The song itself is a calming difference to other songs that would be perfect for those wanting a calming studying playlist or that playlist you listen to on the bus ride home to get you into the comfortable and relaxed mood.
Mirage is a song that can be found on the 7 track EP [ seOul cOllectiOn ] as the 3rd track. The EP was released back on March 2nd 2023. Fans can also find the English version of dOra maar there as well.
5. Question Mark.
Question Mark is a song featured on the single Produced by [ myself ] and would be the 2nd track featured on the 3rd track single. The single was released back in 2021 on July 15th and gained so much attention from fans with questions of why it didn’t hold the title track position with official stages due to the quality of the track.
The song itself has a lot of meaning to fans due to Loves involvement and is such a reminder of the member whenever the track is mentioned, and is one of the most popular fan favourite self produced tracks by OnlyOneOf.
Honorable mentions of other tracks and performances for further intrigued readers as well as my personal top listens this year.
#0. ‘Heather’ (Original by Conan Gray).
Often when fans discover an artist or are curious about their own music taste they often turn to official covers or song mentions the artist would mention upon their SNS (social media). OnlyOneOf members aren’t strangers to suggesting their most loved songs to fans and performing numerous covers to fans to show this, back in 2022 in October. OnlyOneOf would share a special cover of the song ‘Heather’ which is a popular song by the Western artist ‘Conan Gray’ in a beautiful and flower stunning video, it shows the members ability to perform numerous song genres with ease and talent.
#0. HeartBreak Theatre & HeartBreak Terminal.
Heartbreak Theatre was released on the produced series single (part 1) on the 3 track EP as the 3rd track and was released back in 2020 just after the release of the 6 track and popular fan favourite EP [ line sun goodness/goddess ] which was released on October 30th 2019 and featured ‘heartbreak terminal’.
#0. Candy Bomb & Seoul Drift.
When it comes to K-Pop, dance practices are globally beloved as described in the article by the Korea Times [ Why have K-Pop dance practices become so popular? ] thanks to their little to no fancy camera tricks, impressive sound quality, synchronized dance movements with their impressive flow and to some even the squeakiness of the shoes hitting the floor and easy to watch content when studying or wanting to try out the moves to themselves as a dance practice can give the fan such an insight into the choreography itself.
Ahead of the announcement of their tour and different music show promotions, OnlyOneOf would gift fans the extra uncut content of not only a dance stage practice of some of the newest-ly beloved songs Candy Bomb and Seoul Drift but would leave the surprise of the live vocals during the practice!
A sincere congratulations once again to OnlyOneOf for their impressive achievements as artists and their sold out tour stops ahead of their 5th anniversary.
